Awards & Prizes

Dr. Albert Butler Award in Orthopaedics:

Established in 2001 by Mrs. Kaye Takamatsu-Butler in memory of Dr. Albert A. Butler, M.D.,C.M. 1935. The award will be used to support residents doing research in the field of orthopaedics and/or postgraduate orthopaedic training at McGill. This support can include travel funds for residents to attend conferences, the purchase of research equipment and acknowledgement gifts such as book prizes. Awarded by the Program Director of the McGill Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program in consultation with the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education. Value: Maximum $8,000.

Alice Benjamin Award for Excellence in Obstetrics:

Established in 1995 by James and Lisa Alexander to support senior residents (R-3, R-4, R-5) or a Fetal Medicine fellow of the Faculty of Medicine who demonstrates outstanding ability in academic and clinical obstetrics. Awarded by the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Value: up to $1,500.

Alice Benjamin Award Leadership Award in Obstetrics:

Established in 2005 by Chaya and Lorne Lieberman to recognize leadership in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology's residency program. The recipient must have demonstrated an ability to promote an environment that fosters responsible patient care imparted with kindhearted professional comportment. This award is given annually by the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in consultation with the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education, to the Chief Resident who is the best role model during the residency program to his/her peers, juniors and medical students by demonstrating comradery, leadership and excellence in teaching. Value: $1,500.

Dr. Claude Giroud Prize in Pediatrics:

Established in 1981 in memory of Dr. Claude Giroud, Physician-Endocrinologist of the Montreal Children's Hospital and McGill University. Awarded on the basis of scientific merit to the author of a paper suitable for publication in a pediatric journal. The prize is open to medical students and to residents and fellows in pediatric training. Abstract of paper should be submitted to the Associate Dean, Medical Education and Student Affairs, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, 3655 Promenade Sir William Osler, Montreal, QC, H3G 1Y6. Estimated value: $1,000.

Dr. Neville G. Poy Award in Plastic Surgery:

Established in 1994 by Mrs. Vivienne Poy, B.A. 1962, and Dr. Neville G. Poy, B.Sc. 1958, MD 1960, M.Sc. 1963, this award is granted to M.Sc. and Ph.D. students or postdoctoral fellows to support research activities in Plastic Surgery including travel. Awarded by the Department of Surgery. Estimated value: $7,000.

Dr. Benjamin Shore Prize in Plastic Surgery:

Established in memory of Dr. Benjamin Shore, M.D.,C.M. 1965. This prize will be awarded annually to a resident training in one of the McGill teaching hospitals who demonstrates outstanding performance in the Plastic Surgery Program. This prize will be used to fund travel to a national or international meeting in the field of plastic surgery or for special support of a resident doing research in plastic surgery. The Prize will be awarded by the Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Training Program in consultation with the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education. Estimated Value: $5,500.

Dr. Ezra Lozinski Prize in Clinical Medicine:

Established in 1989 in memory of Mrs. Deitcher's father, Dr. Ezra Lozinski, M.D.,C.M.1920 and M.Sc. 1923. The prize shall be awarded annually to a medical resident who is training in one of the McGill teaching hospitals, and who demonstrates outstanding qualities of compassion, understanding, and acceptance of responsibility for ongoing care. The prize is $1,000 and is administered by the Faculty of Medicine. Nominations will be submitted before May 1st of each academic year by clinical departments and the winner will be selected by the Faculty of Medicine Postgraduate Committee. Estimated value: $2,500.

Dr. Margaret Lock Prize in Social Studies in Medicine:

Established in 2005 by Dr. Margaret Lock for graduate students who have completed at least one year of studies in the Department of Social Studies in Medicine. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine Scholarships Committee upon recommendation from the Department of Social Studies in Medicine to an outstanding student who demonstrates high academic standing in either the Medical Anthropology or Medical Sociology program. Estimated value: $500.
