RAMQ-Remunerated formation complémentaire
The Conférence des vice-doyens postdoctoraux (CVDFM) can consider
several types of Ramq-remunerated extensions of training to be completed
in Quebec, i.e. formation complémentaire, which must be approved at
various levels, depending on the purpose. They are:
-
Extensions due to failure at exams
or for academic reasons
(probation, repeat rotations acquisition of specific skills) or
extensions of 6 months duration or
less for recruitment purposes. These can be approved by
the Postgraduate Associate Dean directly and are reported to the
CVDFM for information purposes.
-
Extensions of one year for recruitment
purposes, whether the future employer is a university
hospital or a non-university hospital, and the extension required is
to meet a need at their future place of employment. Please note
that the maximum length of RAMQ funding is one year.
-
Extensions due to a change of program
in order to meet the requirements of an outside organization or to
complete a second residency (exception: the
Clinician Investigator Program - CIP).
Trainees accepted into a third year Family Medicine Program
(exception: the
Clinical Scholar Program - CSP)
are exempt from the need to complete the formation complémentaire
documents.
-
Bursary from the Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Québec (FRSQ):
The PGME Office where training is to occur (for McGill via e-mail to
pgofficer.med@mcgill.ca )
requires a copy of the award letter. There is no need to complete
the formation complémentaire form for trainees who have secured
funding via this research stream. Names are submitted to the CVDFM
and the MSSS for information purposes.
For types 2 and 3, it is necessary for the trainee to complete a
demande de formation complémentaire
form (demande
de formation complémentaire Word Format) The
instruction sheet
(French only) describes the application process. The trainee must
complete all sections of the form, and obtain all required signatures.
True signatures are acceptable on a scanned or faxed document (original
signature not required). Please see below for
further information.
Once completed, the trainee sends the signed scanned document via e-mail to
pgofficer.med@mcgill.ca
or via fax to 514-398-3595 or it can be dropped off at or mailed to the Postgrad Office,
3655 promenade Sir William Osler, Montreal, QC, H3G 1Y6.
Please take note that this process is lengthy, so please ensure to apply
well in advance of your potential start date, for example at least 6
months ahead of time. Please use the following as a guide when applying
for an extension of training:
Formation
complémentaire for recruitment purposes:
Trainees being recruited by a
non-university hospital:
The form needs the signature of the
Director of Professional Services (DPS) of the hospital recruiting or
the letter of recruitment (complete the form up to section VIII). Please
ensure that there is a clear description of the content, site and dates
of training. The form must be accompanied by a firm letter of offer
from the recruiting hospital.
Trainees who are being recruited by a
university hospital:
The form needs all signatures noted above. Please ensure that there is
a clear description of the content, site and dates of training. The
form must be accompanied by a firm letter of offer from the recruiting
hospital. For McGill, your name must also appear on the Faculty's
Medical Manpower list. In the case of a McGill recruitment, we will
liaise with the Associate Dean for Inter-Hospital Affairs, who will sign
on behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, once your recruitment is
confirmed. Once approved at the university level, the Postgraduate
Associate Dean is able to present your case at a meeting of the CVDFM.
Once approved by the CVDFM, the form will be submitted to the Ministry
of Health (MSSS) for approval. Upon receipt of the MSSS approval, the
trainee and the program will be informed via e-mail by the host or
recruiting university, as the case may be, and the trainee will then be
in a position to apply for an extension (in the case of McGill) or
admission to the host university. If refused or if further clarification
is required, the trainee and program will also be informed via e-mail.
Formation complémentaire to meet the requirements of an outside
organization (all Royal College programs, except the CIP;
see below)
The process is exactly as for recruitment purposes, above, including the
need for a firm letter of job offer from a Quebec hospital.
Clinician Investigator Program (RCPSC) and
Clinical Scholar Program (CFPC)
There are provincial quotas for these two research streams, which allow
each Quebec faculty to approve these requests more rapidly, as long as a
position is available. To apply, the trainee completes the formation
complémentaire form, signs it and obtains the signature of the
appropriate Program Director. The original signed form is then sent to
the Associate Dean's office and the Word document via e-mail to
pgofficer.med@mcgill.ca ,
who presents it to the CVDFM for approval. Please note that this
additional year of training usually occurs at the end of residency. The
trainee and the program are informed once approved by the CVDFM.
