Electives by Out of Quebec Trainees

McGill University will accept elective requests from the following trainees: Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada who are registered in a residency program elsewhere in Canada, be they graduates of a Canadian or American medical school or International Medical Graduates.

As far as trainees registered in a residency program in the U.S.A. are concerned, these must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada, as well as graduates of a Canadian or American medical school, in order to be accepted to complete an elective at McGill.

All elective requests must be approved by the McGill Postgraduate Medical Education office in order to occur.

Out-of-province trainees can complete a minimum of one month and maximum of three months of elective at McGill University (except where inter-university agreements exist). The application process is as follows:

1.  To ensure McGill has the capacity to accommodate your elective request, please contact the specific McGill department you are interested in. Follow the link to access the Program Contact List:

2.  The resident must complete an online application form, pay the $75 application fee and provide the following documents:
- copy of medical degree;
- letter of support and funding from the Program Director, indicating that the resident's salary will be maintained during this elective period. This letter must also include the dates of the elective. The letter must come directly from the University by email, fax or mail;
- proof of malpractice insurance coverage for the elective in Quebec. It should state that you are covered in Quebec during the dates of your elective;
- proof of Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency (passports are not accepted).

Click here to access the Request and Payment form. Please take careful note that the $75 application fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. Please ensure that you qualify for the elective, have contacted the McGill department, have read all the rules and followed all steps before payment is made. For more information, please contact the PGME office before payment is made.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: You have two months from the date you submitted your online application to make the payment and provide all required documents. After two months, incomplete applications will be refused.

All documents must be received by the McGill Postgrad office three months prior to the onset of the elective rotation. Late requests or requests that are missing documents will be refused.

3.  The resident must obtain a training card from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ), as well as pay the training card fee. This is done via the CMQ web site at

4.    Immunization Record (click on heading to open form in PDF format): This form needs to be completed by all trainees in order to be able to work in the McGill network, and you must ensure to submit the fully completed form to your base hospital representative (see bottom of the form).

5.   If you are required to complete a rotation at McGill University due to an inter-university agreement and require a work permit to train in Canada, please contact our office for further information.
