Electives by Out of Quebec
McGill University will accept elective
requests from the following trainees: Canadian citizens or Permanent
Residents of Canada who are registered in a residency program
elsewhere in Canada, be they graduates of a Canadian or American
medical school or International Medical Graduates.
As far as trainees registered in a residency program in the U.S.A.
are concerned, these must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents
of Canada, as well as graduates of a Canadian or American medical
school, in order to be accepted to complete an elective at McGill.
All elective requests must be approved by the McGill Postgraduate
Medical Education office
in order to occur.
Out-of-province trainees can complete a
minimum of one month and maximum of three months of elective at McGill University (except
where inter-university agreements exist). The application process is as follows:
To ensure McGill has the capacity to accommodate your elective request,
please contact the specific McGill department you are interested in.

2. The resident must complete
an online application form, pay the $75 application fee
and provide the following documents:
- copy of medical degree;
- letter of support and funding from the Program Director, indicating that the resident's salary
will be maintained during this elective period. This letter must also
include the dates of the elective. The letter must come directly from
the University by email, fax or mail;
of malpractice insurance coverage for the elective in Quebec. It should state that you are covered in Quebec during
the dates of your elective;
- proof of Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency (passports
are not accepted).

note that the $75 application fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. Please ensure that
you qualify for the elective, have contacted the McGill department, have
read all the rules and followed all steps before payment is made. For

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: You have
two months from the date you submitted your online application to
make the payment and provide all required documents. After two months,
incomplete applications will be refused.
All documents must be
received by the McGill Postgrad office three months prior
to the onset
of the elective rotation. Late requests or requests that are missing
documents will be refused.
3. The resident must obtain a
training card from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ), as well as
pay the training card fee. This is done via the CMQ web site at
(click on heading to open form in PDF format): This form needs to be completed by all
trainees in order to be able to work in the
McGill network, and you must ensure to submit
the fully completed form to your base hospital representative (see
bottom of the form).
