Professional Liability Insurance (Malpractice)

With respect to Medical Malpractice Liability Insurance, McGill University medical residents and fellows (“resident”) are covered under their base hospital’s Professional Liability Insurance Programme for the period of April 1st, 2011 to April 1st, 2012.

Coverage applies while carrying out their clinical duties in accordance with the programme listed on their College des Médecins (“CMQ”) training card.

Residents, who wish to do an elective in a non-accredited site, must obtain approval from their programme director as well as the CMQ.  Liability Insurance for the resident’s elective may be provided through the base hospital’s Insurance Programme but solely for certain countries (see list of eligible countries).

Should the host hospital or host university require proof of Medical Malpractice coverage from the resident, a request must be sent to their base hospital or the McGill University Postgraduate Office making sure to include the following information and documents:

1.  A copy of your CMQ training card

2.  The name of the host hospital

3.  The address of the host hospital

4.  The start and end dates of the elective

5.  A duly completed and signed copy of the CMQ “Request for a Rotation in a Non-accredited Site Quebec and Outside Quebec” form.

Should the resident need any information with respect to the scope of the base Hospital’s Medical Malpractice coverage afforded to residents, please call the Direction des assurances du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux (DARSSS) at 514-282-4254 or email at filomena.calabrese.aqesss@ssss.gouv.qc.ca

Eligible Countries

Medical Malpractice Coverage for residents’ electives is only available for the following countries:

file:///Y:/PGME/PGME-CommonShare/1 - MAIN BOX/Website/Liste des pays autorisés pour 2011-2012_2011-08-31.xlsx

Quebec residents doing electives outside of Quebec may need to obtain separate protection for malpractice insurance through a private carrier (The Canadian Medical Protective Association in Ottawa has such a policy if so desired, 1-800-267-6522.  http://www.cmpa.org). It is noteworthy that the Canadian Medical Protective Association does not cover residents working in the United States or abroad.

Should you require confirmation of the AQESSS coverage, please call (514) 842-4861.
