Pediatrics and Subspecialties

The Pediatric program at McGill University is a 4-year program fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Collège des Médecins du Québec. The program is designed to prepare residents for their role as a consultant pediatrician or pediatric subspecialist.  The first 3 years of the program form the core training.  The final year provides residents with opportunities for subspecialty training or general pediatrics.  Typically, 50-75% of MCH residents enter into subspecialties.

The program's home base is the Montreal Children's Hospital. Residents will rotate at the Jewish General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital for perinatology. Mandatory regional ambulatory rotations are offered in Gatineau and Val d'Or, Quebec.  A rural rotation is offered in Iqaluit on Baffin Island.

The following is the general curriculum template for core pediatric, in accordance with the Royal College's Specialty Training Requirements (# weeks/yr listed in parentheses):

PGY-1:
In-patient wards (16), Neonatology/Perinatology (12), Emergency Medicine (8), Ambulatory/Developmental Pediatrics (4), PICU (4), Pediatric Surgery (4), Anesthesia (2)

After the 3 core years of Pediatric training, residents pursue their training in either of two directions:

Pediatric Subspecialty training: there are a wide variety of options at McGill (see below).

There are 4 hours of mandatory teaching sessions/week for all pediatric residents, in addition to service specific educational sessions and journal clubs.  The regularly scheduled teaching sessions include protected academic time, medical grand rounds and chief of service rounds.

The Montreal Children's Hospital has provided excellence in care to children for more than 90 years. It is a busy tertiary care hospital with 85,000 visits to the emergency department, over 8,000 admissions, and 120,000 outpatient visits per year.  The faculty is composed of general pediatricians and a full complement of subspecialists. Fellowship programs are available in all subspecialties.

Finally, the Montreal Children's Hospital has a history of providing a truly multicultural environment for our patients and staff. The hospital has won national awards for their efforts. This receptive environment has allowed us to care for children from all over the world with a variety of medical and surgical problems.
