Pediatric Nephrology
The
program is two years in
length and is designed to qualify the candidate for competence in
pediatric nephrology and to meet the requirements for this specialty as
defined by the Collège des médecins du Québec and the Royal College.
As a prerequisite, the candidate should have three
prior years of Pediatrics in a recognized program.
The
program focuses on three principal themes: a) general consultative
pediatric nephrology; b) dialysis; c) transplantation. Pediatric
nephrology residents participate in consultative services for
hospitalized children and attend both our general nephrology and
specialized clinics, including those for hypertension, SLE and
hereditary renal disease. They are involved in management of chronic
hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients and in the renal
transplantation program, which emphasizes living-related donors.
There
are three elective months and three months, which are integrated with
the adult hospitals at the McGill University Health Center. During
rotations through the adult hospitals, pediatric nephrology residents
may choose a variety of tracks, which combine exposure to adult
nephrology consultation, dialysis and transplantation.
The
Pediatric Nephrology Division has well-established basic and clinical
research programs and a clinical laboratory, which carries out a variety
of specialized tests related to kidney disease and function. All
pediatric nephrology residents are encouraged to involve themselves in
some aspect of clinical or laboratory-based research. There is
opportunity for extended research fellowships for those who plan careers
as independent investigators.
