Pediatric Infectious Diseases
The residency training program in infectious
diseases at the Montreal Children's Hospital is part of an integrated
McGill program of the Departments of Pediatrics, Medicine and
Microbiology and is approved for certification in infectious diseases by
the Royal College. The two year core program includes a minimum
of 12 months of clinical training, 6 months of diagnostic microbiology
and two months of biostatistics and epidemiology.
Twelve months of the program are spent on
the clinical consultation services: Montreal Children's Hospital (10
months) and two months doing adult Infectious Disease consults at either
the Jewish General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital or Montreal General
Hospital. Consultation services are provided for both inpatients and
outpatients.
Of the remaining 12 months at least four
months are spent in specialized laboratories found within the four major
teaching hospitals which offer training in bacteriology, myco-bacteriology,
mycology, parasitology, virology, serology and tropical medicine. At
least six months of the program are elective and may be spent in
clinical infectious diseases, diagnostic microbiology or research.
Involvement in clinical or basic research is a requirement. The research
opportunities include not only clinical and diagnostic microbiology
investigation and training in methods of epidemiology, but also bench
research in areas of molecular biology, host defense and immunology.
The integrated program provides for a
weekly two-hour session devoted to inter-hospital clinical rounds,
journal club, basic science seminars and infection control seminars. A
third year of research is encouraged but optional.
It is possible to do 3 years of training
leading to certification in both Pediatric Infectious Diseases and
Medical Microbiology. If the candidate chooses this stream, the 3
years would consist of 12 months of consulting Infectious Diseases (10
months Pediatric, 2 months Adult Infectious Diseases), and 24 months of
laboratory based Medical Microbiology. More information about this
possibility is available on request. (See Medical Microbiology)
