Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Allergy
This is a two year program which
fulfills the requirements for subspecialty training of the Collège des
médecins du Québec, the Royal College and the American Board of
Allergy and Immunology.
During the first year, emphasis is placed
on clinical experience with a broad range of problems including asthma,
respiratory allergy, allergic skin conditions, food allergy and primary
immune deficiency diseases. There is an active inpatient and outpatient
consultation service. We provide ongoing care for patients with immune
deficiency diseases, as well as patients with severe asthma and complex
allergic or immunologic problems. Most trainees participate in the
McGill Summer Epidemiology program towards the end of the first year.
In the second year, more supervisory
responsibility is given to trainees in the clinic setting. In
addition, time is spent in the laboratory and emphasis is placed on
acquiring a full understanding of basic and applied immunology. The
trainee rotates through the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service of
an adult hospital for three months during the second year. A research
project is encouraged during the second year, which can continue into a
third year if desired.
Throughout the training period, the
trainee is expected to take the formal courses in Immunology and
Immunopathology offered by McGill University.
