Pediatric General Surgery
A two-year residency training program
is provided to candidates who have completed their training in
general surgery. The program is based at the Montreal
Children's Hospital.
The first year consists of at least 6
months of pediatric general surgery. Other rotations consist of 1 to 2
months of neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care , and
possible electives in pediatric urology, pediatric cardiac surgery,
anesthesia, plastics or basic research. A working knowledge of the
French language is an asset. An outside rotation at Hôpital
Ste-Justine is encouraged for bilingual residents.
The second year of the course consists of
twelve months of clinical pediatric general surgery at the level of
chief resident.
The scope of pediatric general surgery
includes non-cardiac thoracic surgery, abdominal, head and neck,
gynecological and some genito-urinary surgery, including trauma and
oncologic surgery, from fetal diagnosis to 18 years of age. Staff are
dedicated to teaching and involved in research as well. Successful
completion of training allows the candidate to sit for the pediatric
surgery examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons and the American
Board of Surgery. Objectives of training can be found on the web sites
of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (www.caps.ca
) and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
