Pediatric Cardiology
The Division of Cardiology at the Montreal
Children's Hospital offers a three year fellowship training program in
the subspecialty of Pediatric Cardiology as approved by the Collège des
médecins du Québec, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada. Three core years in pediatrics are required before entering the
program.
The training program is designed
specifically to ensure that the resident will gain an understanding and
an expertise in: normal cardiac physiology and pathophysiology of
acquired and congenital heart disease; the clinical assessment of the
cardiovascular system by history-taking and physical examination;
imaging of the heart and great vessels by echocardiography, magnetic
resonance imaging, nuclear studies, angiography and hemodynamic studies;
the management of patients with congenital and acquired heart disease
pre and post-operatively; the electrophysiology of the heart including
assessment and treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders; and basic sciences
as they relate to the heart. Approximately 3900 children per year are
evaluated as out-patients. Approximately 120 heart catheterizations are
performed yearly as well as 4445 transthoracic, transesophageal and
fetal echocardiographic studies. The Pediatric Cardiology service works
closely with the cardiovascular surgical team which performs an average
of 200 procedures annually.
The Cardiology Service also participates
in outreach clinics and is an active member and promoter of the Quebec
Telehealth Network.
In conjunction with the adult cardiology
training program of the MUHC, adult cardiology trainees are accepted for
a one to two month rotation in Pediatric Cardiology at the Montreal Children's
Hospital.
