Pediatric Adolescent Medicine

The division of Adolescent Medicine of the Montreal Children's Hospital/McGill University Health Center offers an accredited two year residency training program in Adolescent Medicine. Residents enter the program after successful completion of a minimum of three years of pediatric residency training.

Successful completion of training qualifies residents to take the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada subspecialty exam in Adolescent Medicine provided they have obtained certification in Pediatrics.

The residency includes seven months of general outpatient adolescent medicine, 4.5 months of urgent consultation services, 4 months working with diverse populations of at-risk youth, 3.5 elective months. The Adolescent Division's members have a particular expertise in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, forensic evaluation of sexual assault in pediatric and adolescent patients and eating disorders. Successful graduates of the program will distinguish themselves by their compassionate, whole-person approach to the adolescent, having trained in a model of care that does not confuse expertise with compartmentalization of knowledge.

The program is committed to training leaders in adolescent health, and as such requires the execution of a scholarly project that spans the two years of training. Residents have one day per week of protected research time during the entire course of training. This allows them to utilize the entire two years to develop and implement a research project and to take maximum advantage of the five month-long blocks of protected research time. Collaboration with mentors from the Children's Hospital Research Institute, participation in clinical research rounds and the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program Curriculum as well as course offerings in biostatistics, epidemiology, and research methodology will support the student in developing the skills to add to the current knowledge about adolescent health.
