Obstetrics and Gynecology
The residency
program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill University takes place at
the McGill University Health Center (MUHC). The MUHC is comprised of the
Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal
Children's Hospital and the Montreal Neurological Institute. The Sir
Mortimer. B. Davis Jewish General Hospital and the St. Mary's Hospital
Centre are additional and important training sites.
The teaching
resources of these hospitals include 13,000 deliveries annually and a
commensurate level of gynecological surgical cases. The Royal Victoria
and the Sir Mortimer. B. Davis - Jewish General Hospitals are regional
centers for high-risk obstetrics and for neonatal intensive care.
Curriculum
Training is of five
years' duration and is correlated with the training requirements of the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The overriding
emphasis of the program is excellence in education rather than service.
The program is unique in the number of elective opportunities that are
offered and the emphasis on resident research.
The
R1 year
includes rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology,
ambulatory care in ObGyn, hematology, emergency medicine, Surgical ICU,
neonatology(NICU), and ObGyn ultrasound.
The
R2 year
is designed to provide a core experience in obstetrics and gynecology.
The
R3 year
is designed to provide a core experience in the obstetric and gynecology
subspecialties: rotations in maternal fetal medicine, reproductive
endocrinology/infertility and gynecological oncology. In addition one
period is devoted to the resident's research project.
The
R4 year
of the residency ensures that the trainee will have a broad range of
experience. The options include further research and elective
opportunities that can be selected from colposcopy, adolescent
gynecology, urogynecology, ultrasound in ObGyn, ambulatory obstetrics
and gynecology, or epidemiology. A three to six month rotation in our
community-based program, at Gaspe, Cowansville or Gatineau is mandatory.
Full financial and housing support is provided to residents at that
time.
In the
R5 year,
the trainee assumes the responsibility of chief resident. Six months of
experience as Chief Resident is divided between obstetrics & gynecology.
The remaining part of the year is designed to meet the needs, interests
and future of the individual resident. Elective opportunities can be
selected from maternal fetal medicine, reproductive
endocrinology/infertility, laparoscopic surgery, general surgery and
pathology.
Research
A major emphasis of
our program is resident research. We foster and encourage it; we
especially welcome residents who have research interests. Each resident
in our program has a mandatory research project. There is ample time and
resources available for completion of resident research projects.
Special consideration will be given to residents who are planning an
academic career to carry out extended research projects. Statistics help
will be offered to all worthy projects and funding is available for
completed projects to be presented in Local, National and International
meetings.
Seminars
Each of the
participating hospitals conducts its own series of seminars and teaching
sessions. In addition, there are weekly subspecialty conferences and a
weekly Academic Half-Day for all residents, which includes case
presentations, didactic lectures and journal club.
Your future as an
Obstetrician and Gynecologist on completion of your residency at McGill
is assured. You will have graduated from an internationally recognized,
highly respected and demanding program. Our graduates have been welcomed
and have excelled in every part of North and South America and in
Europe, the Middle and Far East. It need not be said that this includes
every province in Canada.
One of the major
strengths of our program is that we are an important part of a world
class university. McGill University has an international reputation as a
teaching and research institution. Members of the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill gain from our close collegial
association with the rest of the clinical and basic science Faculty. The
relationships are especially rewarding in our mutual research projects.
The residency program
at McGill has gone from strength to strength. In recent years the pace
of change has been especially noteworthy. The program has an outstanding
record both in success with examinations, with their ability to obtain
fellowships and employment upon graduation and to win prizes at national
and international meetings. Graduates are recognized as extremely well
trained "all-rounders" that have a wealth of clinical experience and a
unique research background. There are ongoing improvements and
innovations to the program. To mention a few : there is generous support
both financial and in terms of liberation from clinical responsibilities
for resident research studies and presentations and attendance at local,
national and international meetings and conferences; prestigious awards,
the Molson and Alexander prizes are given annually for clinical or
scientific excellence. The women's pavilion library at Royal Victoria
Hospital and libraries at Jewish General Hospital and St Mary's
Hospital Centre are newly furnished and is provided with the very latest
in computer technology.For
