Nephrology
The residency training
program in nephrology is a university and faculty-based program with
rotations through the three participating hospitals of McGill University
Health Centre, i.e. the Montreal Children's, Montreal General and Royal
Victoria Hospitals, as well as the Jewish General Hospital.
Applicants to the
program should have completed three years of training in internal
medicine or pediatrics. The program consists of two years of training
in nephrology but in all instances, the first appointment is only for a
twelve-month period.
Every resident will be
exposed to intensive teaching in classical clinical nephrology, basic
renal physiology and pathophysiology, hypertension, urolithiasis,
urinary tract infection, renal/transplant immunology, renal pathology
and electrolyte and acid-base problems. Residents participate in a
nephrology consultative service, general nephrology outpatient clinics,
peritoneal dialysis clinics, hemodialysis (in-patient and outpatient
services), transplantation (in-patient and outpatient services) and
specialty clinics, including predialysis clinic, kidney stone clinic,
and others. Rotations will also be arranged through a pediatric
nephrology service. Comprehensive training is given in all forms of
peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and hemoperfusion, ultrafiltration
procedures, access catheter placement, closed renal biopsies and
microscopic urinalysis. There is also exposure to renal radiology,
ultrasound and renal nuclear medicine. Throughout the training period,
the emphasis is on an academic and physiological approach to nephrology.
In addition, there is focus on clinical epidemiology as applied to the
practice of Nephrology. There are also opportunities for elective
rotations.
During the first year,
each resident is encouraged to embark on a clinical research project
with a chosen supervisor as part of their training. If this is not
possible, trainees are encouraged to prepare a comprehensive review on
an important topic within the broad range of nephrology. In the second
or subsequent years, a research project can be arranged under the
supervision of one of the faculty members. Current areas of research
include studies into epithelial cell signaling and the pathogenesis of
glomerulonephritis (Drs. A. Cybulsky, T. Takano, and S.
Lemay), renal development (Dr. P. Goodyer and I. Gupta),
epidemiology of chronic renal failure (Dr. S. Iqbal), various aspects of
pre-dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (Dr. P. Barré), renal
disease during pregnancy (Dr. T.Podymow)
and renal transplantation (Drs. M. Lipman and D. Keith). Please also

Postgraduate courses and
seminars, as well as a schedule of regular visiting lecturers in
addition to regular hospital teaching rounds are given in cooperation
with the Departments of Physiology, and
Experimental Medicine throughout the training period. Attendance at
weekly clinical conferences, journal club presentations and research
seminars is mandatory. Once monthly, a comprehensive tri-hospital renal
pathology teaching session using recent biopsy material is held at the
Montreal Children's Hospital.
