Maternal-Fetal Medicine

This Royal College accredited program is designed as a two-year integrated experience leading to expertise in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Two positions are allocated annually. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Training Program is a jointly run program based at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Jewish General Hospital; both of which are McGill University teaching hospitals

In order to gain experience in maternal-fetal medicine, candidates will manage patients in the Birthing Centre, in-hospital Perinatal Unit, outpatient Antenatal Centre, and Women’s Ultrasound Department.  These patients are referred from a catchment area of approximately 10000 live births per year.  The patients are referred for various medical complications in pregnancy, suspected fetal abnormalities, genetic issues, preterm labor, and maternal or fetal problems requiring ongoing fetal surveillance.  Candidates will divide their time equally between both hospitals and will have ample opportunity to achieve clinical competence in the management of women with complications of pregnancy.

The Birthing Centre of the Royal Victoria Hospital manages approximately 3800 deliveries per year; 100 – 120 patients are transported to the RVH annually from referring or outlying hospitals. There are approximately 5000 patient visits per year at the Antenatal Centre and 17000 visits per year in the Ultrasound Department. About 400 patients per year are admitted to the Perinatal Unit.  The Jewish General Hospital is currently approaching 5000 deliveries annually with about 120 annual high-risk transports. The Ultrasound Unit performs more than 10 800 scans per year.

Under the supervision of the attending staff of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Divisions at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Jewish General Hospital, the candidates will see consultations and follow patients in each of the aforementioned clinical units. The candidates’ responsibilities will increase through the course of the two-year period. They will become increasingly acquainted with and competent in the management of complications of pregnancy, ultrasound, fetal monitoring and diagnostic techniques.  Candidates will attend and participate in the weekly Perinatal Rounds and the monthly Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment conferences.  In addition, candidates will design and execute a research protocol in a clinical or basic science area with the support and supervision of a member of the attending staff.
