Hematology

The Department of Medicine provides an integrated residency training program in hematology at the Montreal Children's, Sir M.B. Davis - Jewish General, Montreal General, and Royal Victoria Hospitals. The facilities of other medical specialties and of other departments are used to provide broad experience in related fields. Elective rotations may be taken at other affiliated hospitals and the Montreal depot of Hema-Quebec. Progressive responsibility in the clinical services and in the laboratory is accorded to the trainee during the residency.

The program is of two years' duration. Trainees are accepted after completion of their core training in internal medicine or pediatrics. In addition to the residency posts, a variable number of positions as clinical and research fellows may be available to candidates for training in special aspects of hematology.

A series of core rotations are established by the Hematology Residency Training Program Committee, which cover the essential clinical and laboratory aspects of hematology. Because the previous training and future goals of the trainees vary considerably, elective rotations are assigned after discussion with each candidate, to address their specific goals. Clinical training will take place at two or more of the participating adult hospitals and will include care of hospitalized hematology and oncology patients, consultations to other services and ambulatory care.

All participants in the two-year program will have a rotation in clinical and pediatric hematology. Those trainees whose core background is pediatrics will spend a greater portion of their clinical training in pediatric hematology and oncology but also will be required to spend six months in adult clinical and laboratory hematology and oncology. The laboratory facilities of the participating hospitals will be used for instruction and experience in the routine hematology laboratory, blood and marrow morphology, blood banking (theoretical and practical), coagulation, the hematologic use of radio-isotopes, bone marrow transplantation and other special procedures. Rotations in related fields such as radiation therapy, pathology and immunology will be encouraged.

An extensive program of research and clinical investigation is being carried out at all participating hospitals and residents will be encouraged strongly to participate in some facet of this work. Participation and attendance at teaching rounds, seminars, guest speakers, journal club as well as an academic half-day are integral learning experiences. Research seminars and a university course are also available.

Hematology is structured so that candidates may prepare for academic careers in hematology, to be medical scientists and for the clinical practice of hematology. The course is also planned to prepare trainees for successful completion of the examinations of the Collège des médecins du Québec, the Royal College and the American Boards.

A large full-time faculty with a wide background of interests and expertise allows personalized supervision and instruction.
