General Surgical Oncology

This is a 2 year program, accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, leading to accreditation without certification.

The objective of this program is to train academically-oriented general surgeons to represent surgery on a multidisciplinary oncology team and to administer state of the art surgical management of the patient with cancer.

The training program consists of obtaining knowledge of the other oncologic specialties, namely medical oncology and radiation oncology (about 2 to 3 months each), as well as obtaining expertise in performing sophisticated cancer operations and participating in important multi-institutional trials.

Most of the clinical training will take place at the MUHC (McGill University Health Center), but some time will be spent at other McGill teaching hospitals, e.g.: The Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital and some time at University of Montreal affiliated hospitals.

The trainee will be given the option of selecting a topic for research, either basic or clinical, to continue throughout the 2 year period. These areas of expertise include studies into the molecular biology of breast and colorectal cancer and mechanisms of breast cancer and melanoma. Other topics for research can be arranged as required.

The trainee will function as a junior staff person and be involved in teaching medical students and residents on the wards and in the operating room. The trainee will also be required to present at some of the oncology conferences held on a regular basis at McGill University or at the teaching hospitals.

Furthermore, the training program will involve acquisition of expertise in dealing with the psychosocial aspects of patient care, and palliative management of pain and associated symptoms.

Regular assessment of the trainee's performance and progress will be made during the program by the teaching staff. A certificate of training will be issued by the University on completion of this program.
