Family Medicine - Emergency Medicine

The Family Medicine - Emergency Medicine Certification Program at McGill University is a one-year program, after the successful completion of the two-year Family Medicine residency. The program leads to the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s Certification of Competence in Emergency Medicine (CCFP-EM).

In order to apply to the College’s CFPC-EM examination eligible third year residency positions at McGill, prospective candidates must be:

A Canadian medical school graduate and
1) Be currently enrolled in an accredited Family Medicine residency program in Canada, or,
2) Have completed a CFPC accredited Family Medicine residency program, and presently practicing in Quebec, or,
3) Have successfully challenged the CFPC Family Medicine Certification Exam via the practice eligibility route and presently practicing in Quebec.

The main goal of the McGill Emergency Medicine program is to develop leaders in Family Medicine with special skills in Emergency Medicine. These leaders will demonstrate special skills in Emergency Medicine that enable them to become a resource to their community and their patients while still maintaining the patient-physician relationship as the central focus of their practice. The program also has a tradition in developing administrators in Emergency Medicine and teachers in Emergency Medicine for Family Medicine residents.

The residents have an administration rotation, which is unique in Canada for the Family Medicine-Emergency Medicine program. All residents attend monthly interactive sessions and monthly oral and written evaluations.

Clinical Emergency rotations are based at the SMBD-Jewish General Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, the Montreal General Hospital, and the Montreal Children's Hospital with other rotations at the Royal Victoria Hospital as well.

At present McGill has the largest Family Medicine - Emergency Medicine Certification Program in Canada with 10 to 15 residents per year. They share many activities along with McGill’s Royal College Emergency Medicine program, also the largest in Canada. This allows for a dynamic environment enriching the overall experience of all the residents.
