Family Medicine
The Department of Family Medicine offers a
two-year postgraduate training program based in Montreal or in Gatineau.
There are three family medicine training centres in Montreal: St.
Mary's Hospital, the Sir M.B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, and the
CLSC Côte-des-Neiges. The family medicine training centre in Gatineau is
located at the Centre Hospitalier des Vallées de l'Outaouais, and is
a francophone program. Regardless of location, the program at any
particular centre offers three main components: ongoing experience in
family practice, coordinated training in the medical specialties, and
exposure to rural practice.
Although residents will rotate through
in-hospital services of internal medicine, pediatrics, perinatology,
psychiatry, surgery, emergency, geriatrics, and ICU, they will also
develop their own supervised practices during two half-days per week
which are spent back in their home family medicine unit throughout their
training period. Supervisors are full-time and part-time practicing
physicians who are certified by the College of Family Physicians of
Canada.
The program also includes an ongoing
curriculum that focuses on management of common patient problems in an
ambulatory setting. Principles of family dynamics, utilization of
community resources and optimal cooperation with other health
professionals in providing comprehensive care are also emphasized in the
curriculum.
