Endocrinology The McGill University residency training
program in Endocrinology is designed to meet the needs of
physicians wishing to enter the practice of clinical endocrinology and
metabolism, as well as of individuals preparing to occupy academic positions in
university medical centers.
The program is designed to allow
residents to complete two clinical years of endocrinology and related
disciplines. The program meets the requirements of the Collège des
médecins du Québec and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada with respect to training in the specialty of endocrinology and
metabolism. Following the two years of training, candidates are eligible
to sit for the certification examinations in endocrinology. An
additional one or two years of training and research can also be
arranged. This time can be organized for the interested resident's
individual needs eg. extra training in selected subspecialty clinics,
continuation of the second year research projects, additional expertise
acquisition in insulin delivery devices, diabetes monitoring, thyroid
ultrasonography, etc. Three years of training in either
Internal Medicine or Pediatrics are required before trainees can be
admitted to the program.
The training program in endocrinology is
based at:
McGill University Health Centre:
- Montreal General Hospital (Dr
Jacques How)
- Montreal Children's Hospital (Dr
Celia Rodd)
- Royal Victoria Hospital (Dr Patrick
Doran)
Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General
Hospital (Dr. Mark Trifiro)
Each hospital maintains an active
endocrine consultation service. Trainees will have clinical
responsibility for patients. Ambulatory clinical experience in diabetes,
through diabetic clinics and in endocrinology, through a range of
specialty clinics, is a major part of the program. Specific experience
in diabetes through diabetic clinics, and in endocrinology through a
range of specialty clinics, is a major part of the program.
Specific experience in neuroendocrinology and reproductive endocrinology is available at the
adult hospitals. Clinical laboratories, providing complete facilities
for endocrine investigation, are available in each hospital. Regular
teaching and research seminars are held in all of the hospitals.
Trainees are expected to take part in
research projects, either of a clinical nature or in one of the basic
research laboratories associated with the Division of Endocrinology.
This is available in either of the clinical years, but is usually in the
second year of the program.
Trainees in adult endocrinology spend 4
to 6 weeks in pediatric endocrinology at the Montreal Children's
Hospital and another 4 to 6 weeks acquiring expertise in reproductive
endocrinology at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Additional opportunities
for electives - including off campus - are also available. Residents whose core program is
pediatrics will have their training at the Montreal Children's Hospital
and will do elective time in adult endocrinology in one of the adult
hospitals.
All appointments are made by a training
committee consisting of the Program Director and the site training
coordinators from the major teaching hospitals at McGill University.
Applications must be received by August 31st of the year preceding the
appointment. However, early applications (e.g. before July 15th) is strongly encouraged to permit arrangement of
interviews, which are usually
required.
