Dermatology
The McGill University residency training
program in dermatology is coordinated by the Program Director, Dr. Linda
Moreau, the Division Chief, Dr. Denis Sasseville and
representatives of the four teaching hospitals:
Montreal Children's Hospital
Montreal General Hospital
Royal Victoria Hospital
Sir M.B. Davis/Jewish General Hospital
The program is approved by the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Collège des médecins du Québec and the American Board of
Dermatology.
One applicant can be accepted annually
directly from a Canadian Medical School through CaRMS. American
candidates will be accepted on a quota basis and applicants with
non-Ministry acceptable out-funded sources are also considered if
qualified. All appointments are made by a training committee consisting
of the Program Director, the representatives from the four teaching hospitals, and
the resident representatives.
The program consists of five years of
training, including one year in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics, a basic
clinical year with rotations through non-Internal Medicine fields (i.e.
Pediatrics, ER, Surgery, etc.) and three years in Dermatology. The
Dermatology program involves primarily ambulatory teaching with
inpatient consultation services of dermatologic patients, including a
four to six month rotation at the Montreal Children's Hospital.
The program provides exposure to specialty clinics in leg ulcers,
contact dermatitis patch testing, melanoma, phototherapy, laser therapy
and cutaneous surgery including Mohs micrographic surgery. In addition
to clinical dermatology, all residents spend two months each year in Dermatopathology. Elective rotations are available. Residents are
also
required to participate in research during their training.
Basic science seminars, morphology
sessions, journal club, dermatopathology and surgery lectures are part
of a topic-based integrated schedule in which teaching rounds are held weekly.
Residents are encouraged to participate
at the annual meetings of the Canadian Dermatological Association and
the American Academy of Dermatology.
