  • First Episode Psychosis Fellowship:
    Name of Institution:
    Douglas Mental Health University Institute
    Type of Fellowship: Clinical/Research
Fellowship Program Director: Dr. Ashok Malla
    Number of Positions: 1
    Length: 1 year
Mission statement: There has been a burgeoning interest in research in first episode psychosis (FEP) and early intervention. FEP patient samples provide an ideal opportunity to investigate multiple domains of psychopathology, pathophysiology, treatment interventions and outcome and to understand and potentially influence the longer term course of psychotic disorders. This is especially so in a program such as Prevention and Early intervention Program for Psychoses (PEPP-Montreal) at the Douglas Institute as the sample is extremely well characterized through prospective collection of data on multiple domains on all patients presenting for treatment within a defined catchment area, thus providing a highly representative and unselected sample for research purposes. Investigations currently under way at PEPP-Montreal include studies in early case detection including pathways to care and ethnicity/immigration; brain imaging and neuro-cognitive predictors of short and long term outcome; psychological, social and demographic predictors of outcome on multiple domains; pharmaco-genetic studies; studies of substance abuse in FEP; and controlled trials of mostly non-pharmacological and some pharmacological interventions.    For a complete description of this fellowship, please consult this link:

Fellowship Program Director: Dr. Ridha Joober
    Number of Positions: 1
    Length: 1 year
Mission statement: Genes and the environment interact in a complex way to increase the risk for psychiatric disorders.  Although in the last 10 years, several specific genetic factors and environmental stressors have been reported to be implicated in psychiatric disorders, replication and confirmation of these results remain problematic.  Many biological, behavioral and methodological aspects may be at the origin of these difficulties.  The ``Neuroscience and Psychiatry`` fellowship offers the students to work on specific biological (mainly genetic) questions in relation to several psychiatric neurodevelopmental disorders (schizophrenia, ADHD, Autism, Conduct disorders, learning disabilities) while developing analytical and critical understanding of the complexity underlying these disorders.  For a complete description of this fellowship, please consult this link:

    Type of Fellowship: Clinical/Research
Fellowship Program Director: Dr. Sherif Karama
    Number of Positions: 1
    Length: 1 year
    Mission statement:

Mission Statement: While the last few years have witnessed an explosion of research on the neurobiological underpinnings of psychopathology, relatively little work has focused on the neurobiology of individual differences in healthy subjects. A better grasp of normal human variability is an important step that would likely improve our understanding of changes or predispositions associated with psychopathology.  The “Neuroscience of Individual Differences” fellowship offers the fellow to work on the relationship between a given trait (e.g. general cognitive ability, circulating hormone levels) and brain structure using sophisticated brain imaging methods while developing an analytical and critical understanding of the complexity underlying apparently simple behavioral differences in healthy individuals.  For a complete description of this fellowship, please consult this link: Neuroscience of Individual Differences Fellowship.
