Message from the Chair

Welcome to the RUIS McGill Web site.

Since the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services restructured its provincial health network and created the Réseau universitaire intégré de santé (RUIS) in 2003, the RUIS McGill has sought to understand and fulfill the needs and expectations of its population within each of the regions of its vast territory.

Communication and collaboration have been pivotal to our success stories in meeting the many challenges that we face; indeed, there have been many challenges thus far. The territory includes roughly 1.7 million people across an area that covers 63 per cent of Quebec, from Montreal and part of the Montérégie to the Outaouais, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, James Bay-Cree Territories, Northern Quebec, and Nunavik regions. Health determinants—such as income, education, social environment and support, available health services, and culture—vary for each region. Shortages of general practitioners and specialists in a variety of fields also require their own set of solutions.

Whether it is providing new learning opportunities, encouraging residents’ training in a specific region, advancing our telehealth capabilities or creating a coordinating centre so that patients don’t have to travel a huge distance to Montreal to receive care, our focus remains unchanged: Exemplary tertiary patient care, research, teaching and technology evaluation that help improve the health and well-being of Quebecers regardless of where they call home.
